About this tool
Checking whether a domain is "available" sounds simple, but WHOIS and RDAP were designed to report registration data, not to answer a yes/no availability question directly — and missing data doesn't always mean a domain is free. This tool is built specifically to avoid the common mistake of treating "no data found" as automatic proof of availability, and instead reports one of six clear, honest states.
The six possible results
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Registered | Registration data was found — this domain is registered to someone. |
| Apparently available | The registry reported no existing registration. This is a strong signal the domain can be registered, but only a registrar's live availability check at the moment of purchase is a guarantee — domains can be registered by someone else between this check and an attempt to buy it. |
| Unable to confirm | We received a response but could not confidently determine registration status from it. This is not the same as "available" — treat it as unknown. |
| Not supported | Neither RDAP nor WHOIS lookups are available for this domain extension yet. |
| Lookup failed | The lookup could not be completed (a timeout or upstream error) — this says nothing about the domain itself. Try again shortly. |
| Reserved name | This is a reserved name (RFC 2606 / IANA special-use) that will never have real registration data, by design. |
Why we don't just say "Available"
A registry reporting no existing record for a domain is a strong, useful signal, but it is not the same guarantee a registrar gives you at the exact moment of purchase. Between this check and an actual registration attempt, someone else could register the domain first. We report "Apparently available" rather than a flat "Available" specifically so that distinction stays clear.
