About this tool

IPv4 is the original, still-dominant Internet Protocol addressing scheme — 32-bit addresses written as four dot-separated numbers (like 192.168.1.1). This tool accepts IPv4 input only, so you always know exactly what you're checking. For IPv6 addresses, use our dedicated IPv6 Lookup tool, or IP Lookup to accept either version.

IPv4 address types

  • Public — routable on the open internet.
  • Private (RFC 1918) — 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16, used inside home and office networks, never routed publicly.
  • Loopback — 127.0.0.0/8, always refers to the local machine itself.
  • Link-local — 169.254.0.0/16, auto-assigned when no other address is available.
