About this tool

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the IANA-standardized successor to WHOIS. Unlike WHOIS, which returns free-text output with no fixed format, RDAP returns structured JSON — meaning the data this tool shows for an RDAP-covered domain is directly parsed from the registry's own structured response, not guessed from unformatted text.

RDAP vs. WHOIS

  • Structured data. RDAP responses are JSON with a fixed schema (RFC 9083) — every field has a defined meaning, so there's no ambiguity in parsing it.
  • Not universal yet. Not every domain extension has an RDAP server. This tool automatically falls back to WHOIS for those, which is why some lookups above show "WHOIS fallback."
  • Same underlying registries. RDAP doesn't replace who controls the data — it's a better-designed protocol for accessing the same registries WHOIS has always queried.

What "registrar's own RDAP server" means

For many gTLDs (like .com), the registry's RDAP response includes a link to the specific registrar's own RDAP server, which may hold additional detail beyond what the registry-level response includes. This tool shows that link when the registry provides one, but doesn't automatically follow it, to keep lookups fast and within a single request.
