About this tool

IPv6 is the modern Internet Protocol addressing scheme, using 128-bit addresses — a vastly larger space than IPv4's 32 bits, written as eight groups of hexadecimal digits (like 2001:4860:4860::8888). This tool accepts IPv6 input only. For IPv4 addresses, use our dedicated IPv4 Lookup tool, or IP Lookup to accept either version.

IPv6 address types

  • Public — globally routable.
  • Private / Unique Local (ULA) — fc00::/7, IPv6's equivalent of RFC 1918 private ranges.
  • Loopback — ::1, the local machine.
  • Link-local — fe80::/10, used for on-link communication only.

One IPv6-specific detail worth knowing: an address written as ::ffff:x.x.x.x is an "IPv4-mapped" IPv6 address — it embeds an ordinary IPv4 address, and this tool checks that embedded address's real type rather than treating the outer IPv6 form at face value.
