About this tool
WHOIS is the original protocol for looking up who registered a domain name. This tool queries the modern, structured RDAP protocol first (see our RDAP Lookup tool), and automatically falls back to legacy WHOIS text lookups for domain extensions RDAP doesn't yet cover — so you get one straightforward result either way, without needing to know which protocol a given domain extension uses.
What you'll see
- Registrar — the company the domain is registered through, plus its IANA registrar ID where the data source reports one.
- Registration and expiry dates — when the domain was first registered, and when it's due to expire, with age and days-remaining calculated for you. See our Domain Age Checker and Domain Expiry Checker for dedicated views of these.
- Nameservers — which DNS servers the registry has on file for this domain.
- Domain status — EPP status codes explained in plain English by our Domain Status Checker.
- DNSSEC — whether DNSSEC is enabled, per the registry's own declaration (only available when RDAP is the data source).
Why some fields say "Not available" or "Unknown"
Since GDPR and similar privacy regulations took effect, most registrars redact registrant contact details by default. A missing organization field or a "Privacy/proxy protected" status usually means privacy protection is active, not that the data doesn't exist. DNSSEC and a few other fields are only reported when RDAP (not legacy WHOIS) is the data source — "Unknown" there means this domain's registry doesn't yet publish that information via either protocol, not that DNSSEC is disabled.
Is WHOIS data always accurate?
It reflects what the registry or registrar has on file, which is usually accurate for registration/expiry dates and nameservers, but registrant contact details are frequently redacted for privacy and shouldn't be relied on for identifying a domain's owner.
Does looking up a domain notify its owner?
No. WHOIS and RDAP are public lookup protocols — querying them is anonymous and leaves no trace visible to the domain owner.
